DARK SPOTS: How to Treat HyperpigmentationUpdated 2 days ago

Q: How to treat hyperpigmentation & dark spots?

A: Hyperpigmentation is a skin condition in which dark spots or patches appear due to an overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives color to our skin, hair, and eyes. Unlike rosacea, where inflammation causes redness, inflammation in hyperpigmentation triggers excess melanin production, leading to uneven skin tone and discoloration.

A variety of factors can cause this inflammatory response, including:

  • Trauma from breakouts or blemishes
  • Excess heat or cold exposure
  • Sun exposure
  • Internal heat from high temperatures or intense workouts

When the skin experiences these stressors, melanocytes (the cells responsible for melanin production) respond by increasing pigment production in an attempt to protect the skin. The result? Stubborn dark spots can appear brown, black, gray, red, or pink, depending on skin tone and the trigger.

While multiple factors contribute to hyperpigmentation, inflammation, and heat play the biggest role. Whether caused by UV exposure, an injury, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne, addressing inflammation is key to preventing and managing discoloration effectively.

Because many factors contribute to Hyperpigmentation, we recommend working with one of our estheticians to develop a plan that works for you.
