TONERS: Hydrating vs. Corrective Toners - What’s the difference?Updated 2 days ago
Toners play an essential role in a well-rounded skincare routine, but not all toners serve the same purpose. The difference between a hydrating toner and a corrective toner comes down to their function and the ingredients they contain.
Hydrating Toners: These are designed to restore moisture and provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant support. They are typically packed with humectants like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and soothing botanicals to replenish hydration and strengthen the skin barrier. Hydrating toners are ideal for dry, sensitive, or dehydrated skin and help prep the skin for better absorption of serums and moisturizers. They are also the perfect finish for any skincare routine and can be used throughout the day to support the skin.
Corrective Toners: These go beyond hydration by targeting specific skin concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation, or signs of aging. They often contain exfoliating acids (like glycolic, salicylic, or mandelic acid), brightening agents (like niacinamide), or soothing anti-inflammatory ingredients to refine skin texture, reduce breakouts, or boost cellular turnover. Corrective toners help optimize your skincare routine without overdrying the skin—a key advantage over some corrective serums.
For optimal results, I often recommend incorporating both types into a routine, using a hydrating toner daily and a corrective toner a few times per week based on skin needs.
Pro Tip: Many of our clients love to layer both—using an active toner a few nights per week, and a hydrating toner daily to keep skin balanced and happy.
When using a corrective toner, we recommend using these gauze pads: AOS Luxe Toner Pads -These gauze pads provide a little texture to help the toner get into the skin. They also waste less product than using a cotton pad.
